The new normal. Job search competitive advantage.
It’s no longer about being qualified. It’s about being:
-
- positioned clearly
- easy to understand
- “obvious” for the specific role
- well-networked into your target companies
- a sure hiring bet
If you’re in the software / IT job market right now, here’s the truth:
…..it’s not broken …but it’s not easy either!
It’s the most challenging job market to i’ve seen in 20+ years of recruiting & coaching. So today I’m writing a longer blog with two major topics:
1. The State of the Software / IT Job Market (Right Now)
The job market has improved in some areas… and remained stubbornly difficult in others. Here’s what I’m seeing consistently across engineering leaders, product leaders, IT leaders, and senior ICs:
What’s “better” right now
-
Hiring is happening, even if cautiously
- January – June is the main hiring season
-
Some sectors are loosening budgets: cybersecurity, healthcare IT, enterprise systems, infrastructure, AI-enabled product teams
-
Companies are moving from “freeze” to “selective hiring”
Side point: When driving in the fog you have to slow down. Similarly, with uncertainty in the economy companies slow down on decision making.
…and this directly effects hiring!
What’s still hard
-
Senior roles often have 200–500+ applicants in days
-
Many job postings are “Ghost Jobs” that companies have no intention of filling
-
For those “Real” job postings, companies are taking longer to decide
-
Interview cycles are longer and often include more stakeholders & pannel interviews
-
There’s heavy emphasis on:
-
business impact
-
cross-functional leadership
-
transformation execution
-
measurable outcomes
-
The new competitive advantage
is no longer just about being qualified.
It’s about being:
-
positioned clearly
-
easy to understand
-
“obvious” for the specific role
-
well-networked into your target companies
- a sure hiring bet
The people winning jobs right now usually have 3 things working together:
-
a tight narrative (LinkedIn + elevator pitch + storytelling)
-
a repeatable job-search system
- they approach their job search with unconventional methods that get results
Bottom line: being qualified isn’t enough anymore.
You need clear positioning + momentum + a system that doesn’t burn you out.
Which brings me to topic #2…
2. Structure Beats Motivation (Every Time)
Uncertainty messes with your head in a job search.
When you don’t know when the next lead is coming, who will respond, or what’s working, days blur together. You stay busy, but you don’t feel progress.
That’s not a motivation issue.
It’s a structure issue.
When you were working, your calendar carried you:
meetings, deadlines, priorities. In a job search, that structure disappears — and burnout shows up fast.A job search isn’t a sprint. It’s a marathon!
So the goal isn’t “work harder.” It’s working smarter.
to stay consistent longer than everyone else. The 4–5 Hour Job Search System
Instead of treating job searching like a 7–8 hour grind (which usually backfires), I recommend this:
✅ 4–5 hours/day of focused job-search activity
✅ Monday–Friday only
✅ weekends time off (recovery is strategy)That gives you consistency without running yourself into the ground.
TIP: The 80-15-5 rule. Most job seekers have this backwards!
Spend your time like this….
-
80% networking
-
15% talking with recruiters
-
5% applying online
Use 45–60 minute time blocks (pick 4–5 per day)
Choose 4–5 blocks total/day:
-
Networking (1:1 conversations)
-
Email outreach + responses
-
Phone follow-ups
-
LinkedIn (post/comment/research)
-
Knowledge update (stay current)
-
Online applications (targeted only)
And one non-negotiable:
Daily “Me Time” exercise, volunteer, hobbies, friends — whatever refuels you.
Because if you lose energy, you lose momentum.
Quick question:
What would change if your job search had a sustainable schedule behind it?

Win the Interview: Why Asking Smart Questions Makes You Unforgettable
Rethinking Interviews: Why Asking Smart Questions Can Set You Apart in a Sea of Great Candidates
In the previous Spotlight, we discussed: How One IT Leader Landed a Role in 78 Days by Treating His Job Search Like a Strategic IT Deployment – May #26. If you missed that one you can read it here.
In tech hiring today, qualifications are no longer the differentiator. It’s not uncommon for hiring managers to review a stack of resumes that all check the right boxes—technical capabilities, relevant experience, and solid accomplishments. But when it’s time to choose who moves forward, one key factor rises above the rest: how a candidate shows up in conversation. Tip! People hire people, not resumes!
A polished résumé & LinkedIn profile may open the door, but what happens in the interview determines who gets the offer. And here’s the secret—it’s not about having the perfect answers. It’s about asking the right questions.
Why High-Impact Candidates Ask Instead of Just Answer
The most memorable job seekers understand that an interview is not a test—it’s a strategic dialogue. Rather than treating it as a one-way evaluation, they take the initiative to steer the conversation through well-crafted, purposeful questions.
Consider questions like:
-
“What are the critical success factors you’re looking for in this role?”
- “What are the top 3–5 must haves you are seeking in your next new hire?”
-
“What current projects or initiatives would I be contributing to right away?”
-
“How do you define success for this position over the first 6–12 months?”
-
“What originally brought you to this company, and why have you stayed?”
These kinds of questions do more than show curiosity—they demonstrate leadership, strategic thinking, and a genuine interest in alignment.
The Power of Question-Led Interviews
When you approach an interview with a mindset of discovery and contribution, several things happen:
-
You demonstrate business acumen. Asking about initiatives and success metrics shows you understand the bigger picture.
-
You shift the dynamic. Instead of being evaluated, you become a peer discussing mutual goals.
-
You uncover key information. Insight into team priorities and company culture helps you tailor your responses—and make better decisions.
This method of interviewing isn’t just a tactic; it’s a reflection of how senior leaders operate—by asking the right questions to uncover the right problems to solve.
Closing Thoughts:
Take Control of the Interview Room
One of the most effective changes I help clients make is this shift in perspective: from trying to “pass” the interview question/answer “GAME” to using it as a strategic conversation to assess fit and demonstrate value.
We practice question-based interviewing in mock sessions so tech professionals and transitioning leaders can walk into real interviews with confidence, clarity, and control.
If your interviews aren’t converting into offers—or if you’re getting close but not quite there—it might be time to shift from perfect answers to powerful questions.
On the street:
ADP May–June 2025 Private Sector Jobs Report. The pace of hiring in the private sector slowed dramatically in May, with just 37,000 jobs added—down from April’s revised 60,000 and marking the weakest job growth since March 2023. This sharp deceleration signals a notable loss of momentum after a relatively strong start to the year. Sector-level data shows that service-providing industries remained the main drivers of growth. Leisure and hospitality led with new roles, followed by financial activities and the information sector. On the flip side, professional and business services lost 17,000 jobs, and education and health services declined by 13,000.
From a company size perspective, mid-sized businesses (50–249 employees) were the strongest contributors, adding 51,000 jobs, whereas small businesses and large enterprises saw declines of 13,000 and 3,000 jobs, respectively. Despite the slowdown in hiring, wage growth held steady. Job-stayers saw a 4.5% annual pay increase, while job-changers continued to command higher raises, with average gains of 7.0%.
What this means for mid-senior technology professionals:
San Francisco Bay Area Tech Job Market
The Bay Area tech sector is sending mixed signals—marked by fierce competition for elite AI talent, reduced layoffs at some companies, but still boasting high compensation and selective hiring.Bay Area remains the global hub for AI investment, securing nearly $70 billion of the $134.6 billion in 2024 venture capital funding.
Takeaways:
Experience matters: The steep decline in entry-level hiring and shift toward seasoned professionals signal that mid-to-senior candidates are now in demand—especially those with domain expertise in AI, security, and cloud.
Leverage geography: Position candidates toward San Jose and specialized Bay Area hubs where growth is accelerating.
Stay AI-aligned: Emphasize AI capabilities (e.g., prompt engineering, ML integrations) as a differentiator—these skills are commanding top-tier offers.Expect strategic hiring: Companies are no longer hiring en masse—they want seasoned leaders who can drive outcomes from day one. Encourage clients to demonstrate immediate impact in interviews and networking.

Run A Job Search Like an IT Enterprise Rollout
A Case Study: How One IT Leader Landed a Role in 78 Days by Treating Their Job Search Like a Strategic IT Deployment
In the previous Spotlight, we discussed Mastering the Job Search Cycle, A Smarter Strategy for Tech Leaders! – Apr #25. If you missed that one you can read it here. This month we look into a recent client success.
Client Snapshot
-
Title: Director of IT
-
Background: Former IT leader at a mid-sized SaaS firm
-
Expertise: Cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, enterprise systems, digital transformation
-
Goal: Land a senior IT leadership role at a growth-stage company
-
Challenge: First proactive job search in over a decade—previous roles came through internal promotion or inbound interest
The Strategy: Run the Job Search Like an Enterprise Rollout
Approaching his job search with the same discipline and structure he applied to major IT initiatives, we mapped out a plan with measurable milestones and iterative improvement cycles.
-
Target Timeline: 120 days
-
Key Milestone: Secure and accept a role aligned with his leadership and technical strengths
-
Execution Framework: High-volume outbound outreach, warm introductions through networking, and continuous messaging optimization
Strategic Prospecting
We identified ~170 target companies using filters such as funding status, growth potential, and alignment with cloud or security initiatives.
- From that list, we conducted direct outreach to 85 companies with high potential fit.
High-Cadence Outreach + Purposeful Networking
-
Sent ~20 personalized cold messages per day (~100 per week) via LinkedIn and email
-
Applied to 2–5 highly relevant roles per day on LinkedIn
-
Scheduled 84 networking meetings, with ~20% from new connections, to build referrals and gather inside knowledge
-
Optimized his LinkedIn profile to attract inbound leads
Personal Branding Foundation: Résumé + LinkedIn Messaging
Before launching the outreach strategy, we built a strong personal brand foundation that clearly communicated his value proposition to the job market.
-
Resume and LinkedIn profile were reframed around measurable outcomes, not job duties or general responsibilities.
-
We crafted a condensed value proposition that communicated how the client drives impact through cloud transformation, cybersecurity leadership, and scalable enterprise systems.
-
The messaging was tailored to highlight key metrics, wins, and results—from cost savings and risk reduction to improved uptime and scalability.
This clarity helped with credibility while increasing response rates, improved recruiter interests, and create consistency across touch points.
Posting Articles to Drive Engagement
To further increase visibility and establish himself as a thought leader, we strategized to and posted relevant articles and insights related to his expertise in cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, and digital transformation.
- These posts drove increased engagement from recruiters and decision-makers in the client’s industry, boosting credibility and visibility.
Resume & Career Summary Optimization
We created a one-page career summary for networking conversations and a customized resume that emphasized outcomes and achievements from their most recent role. This flexible format allowed for easy adaptation across multiple leadership-level job opportunities.
Warm Network Engagement
We designed a targeted strategy to activate their warm network—including alumni connections, professional associations, LinkedIn groups, past employees the client had hired, former managers and even a few neighbors.
- Using creative and impactful messaging, we reached out in ways that felt authentic and thoughtful, rather than transactional.
- These warm touches created awareness about their job search, led to introductions, and generated meaningful leads.
Question-Based Interview Prep
Once interview opportunities began to come in, we focused heavily on strategic interview preparation. This was an ongoing process though-out or time working together.
Rather than simply practicing answers, we developed a library of smart, diagnostic questions that steered conversations toward pain points that the client was uniquely qualified to solve.- This transformed interviews into problem-solving discussions—not just evaluations.
- It significantly increased conversion rate from first-round interviews to final stages, ultimately leading to multiple offers.
The Insider Connection: Leveraging Influence with a “Third-Party Close”
As interview processes advanced, we introduced a tactic often overlooked: influencing behind the scenes.
We proactively identified contacts within target companies—former colleagues, second-degree connections, or shared alumni—who could credibly speak on their behalf or help validate candidacy internally.- These “third-party closes” weren’t used in every scenario, but when applicable, they provided an edge by reinforcing credibility with hiring managers and executive stakeholders.
- Sometimes, a quick Slack or internal message from a known quantity made the difference between being shortlisted and being selected.
This tactic underscored a powerful truth: decisions are rarely made in a vacuum, and the right internal ally can shift perception and momentum. Hence, people hire “people!” not resumes and applications.

The San Francisco Bay Area tech job market in April 2025 presents a complex landscape for job seekers and career changers. The year began with notable job losses in the tech sector though at a decreasing rate. According to Layoffs.fy, April saw 23,000 tech layoffs. A level not seen since August 2024.
Key Trends:
Persistent Job Losses: The first quarter saw continued layoffs across tech firms, contributing to a broader employment slump. Economists warn that these early-2025 losses reflect deeper structural challenges.AI and Security Growth: While AI and network security roles are growing, they haven’t been enough to offset broader declines. Remote Work Expansion: Companies embracing remote hiring are gaining flexibility, opening doors for non-local candidates. Emerging Demand: Skills in ERP systems, data visualization, and financial modeling are increasingly valued—especially by startups and late-stage tech firms.
Sales Recovery: Some non-technical sectors, like sales, are starting to rebound.Outlook:
The market sends mixed signals—declines in traditional tech jobs persist even as specialized roles and select sectors show resilience. Long-term recovery may take time, and the threat of a regional recession looms.Booster!

Mastering the Tech Job Search Cycle, A Step By Step Approach
This month let’s dig into how tech workers have Mastered the Job search cycle.
The traditional job search method—applying online and waiting for a callback—is no longer enough. In today’s competitive tech job market, success requires a strategic, ongoing approach. The most effective job seekers don’t just submit applications; they work through a continuous cycle of activities that create multiple opportunities at once. That’s where the Job Search Cycle comes in—a proven framework of 20 essential activities designed to keep your job search moving forward.

One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is treating LinkedIn as a passive tool instead of an active platform. Consistently updating your LinkedIn profile, posting industry insights, and sharing thought leadership articles can significantly increase your visibility. Hiring managers and recruiters are constantly searching for experts in their fields. If you’re not regularly engaging on LinkedIn, you’re missing a major opportunity to make yourself findable to decision-makers.
Equally important is building strong professional connections. Expanding your network isn’t just about adding contacts—it’s about creating meaningful relationships. Reaching out to past bosses and coworkers, attending industry conferences, and joining online groups can help you stay on the radar of influential professionals. The hidden job market is real, and many roles are filled through referrals before they ever hit job boards. If you’re not proactively networking, you’re likely missing out on high-value opportunities.
Beyond networking, it’s crucial to engage with recruiters and hiring managers directly. Instead of waiting for them to find you, take the initiative to build lists of top hiring managers in your field and reach out with personalized messages. Recruiters are also valuable allies—connecting with them and maintaining a relationship can keep you in the loop on new roles before they become widely available.
Another often-overlooked activity is setting up 20-minute networking meetings. These short, focused conversations help you gain insights, learn about potential job openings, and strengthen relationships. When done consistently, these meetings can lead to unexpected opportunities and even direct referrals to hiring managers. If you’re not sure where to start, begin with your alumni network, past colleagues, and people in your industry who are active on LinkedIn.
An intelligent job seeker also knows the importance of giving back to their network. Sharing job leads, making introductions, and offering recommendations not only helps others but also strengthens your own reputation. The more you position yourself as a valuable resource, the more likely others will think of you when relevant opportunities arise. Career success isn’t just about what you know—it’s about who knows you and the value you bring to the table.
Closing Thoughts:
If your job search feels stagnant, the real question isn’t “How many applications have I submitted?”—it’s “Am I consistently working through all parts of the Job Search Cycle?” Applying online is just one piece of the puzzle. The real game-changer is executing all 20 activities regularly.
On the street:
The tech industry has experienced significant layoffs in recent years, reflecting shifts in market dynamics and technological advancements. According to data from Layoffs.fyi, a platform tracking tech industry layoffs, the numbers are telling the story.
So far in 2025, 22,692 tech employees have been laid off across 81 tech companies. Additionally, government employees were laid off by DOGE, contributing to a total of 113,331 federal job departures.
These figures illustrate a fluctuating trend, with a peak in 2023 and a notable decrease in layoffs in 2025. This decline may suggest a stabilization in the tech sector or a shift in workforce strategies.
Several factors contribute to these layoffs. The rapid integration of artificial intelligence and automation has led companies to reassess their workforce needs, often resulting in reduced demand for certain roles. Additionally, economic uncertainties and shifts in consumer behavior have prompted organizations to restructure and prioritize efficiency. Notably, major companies such as Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce have implemented significant layoffs in recent years, reflecting broader industry trends.
For tech professionals navigating this evolving landscape, adaptability is crucial. Embracing continuous learning and staying abreast of emerging technologies can enhance employability. Networking, engaging in professional communities, and exploring opportunities in burgeoning tech sectors can also provide avenues for career growth amidst these industry shifts.

Should I add the Open To Work badge on my LinkedIn Profile?
This month let’s dig into the great debate -“To turn on Open to Work on your LinkedIn Profile or not. That is the question!
Should You Use the “Open to Work” Badge on LinkedIn? 🧐
So…You’ve probably seen that green “Open to Work” badge popping up all over LinkedIn. Maybe you’ve even thought about adding it yourself.
AND, everyone has an opinion on this.
After all, with over 220 million people using the feature (a 35% jump from last year according to LinkedIn!), it seems like a no-brainer, right? How can that many job seekers be wrong? Well… not so fast. If you’re an IT leader looking for your next big opportunity, you might want to think twice before turning it on.

Why the Badge Could Be a Good Idea
Let’s start with the pros. The badge makes it super clear that you’re looking, which means recruiters can find you more easily. In fact, LinkedIn says that using “Open to Work” can double your chances of getting a recruiter message. If you make it public, that number goes up by 40%! So if you want to boost your visibility, this could be a great way to do it. Plus, in today’s job market, being in transition isn’t the red flag it used to be—layoffs happen, and there’s no shame in putting yourself out there.
Why It Might Work Against You
Now, the downside. Some recruiters and hiring managers see the public badge as a little… desperate. Ouch, right? Instead of highlighting your skills and expertise, the green banner puts all the focus on the fact that you’re looking. And for IT leaders, that might not be the impression you want to leave. Your experience and leadership should take center stage—not your job search status.
The Best of Both Worlds?
If you’re torn, there’s a solid middle ground: turn on “Open to Work” but set it to be visible only to recruiters. That way, the right people still know you’re looking, but you don’t have to worry about any negative perceptions. Meanwhile, focus on sharing insights, networking, and engaging with your industry. Basically, let your expertise do the talking.
Closing Thoughts:
At the end of the day, it’s your call. If you feel good about using the badge, go for it! If it doesn’t sit right with you, skip it and lean into networking instead. Whatever you choose, just make sure you’re putting your best foot forward and staying active in your job search. Your next big opportunity is out there—you’ve got this!

Tech employment is off to a strong start as hiring momentum continues. The Information Technology job market started strong in 2025, with tech companies and employers across industries adding workers and increasing job postings. In January alone, the tech sector saw a net gain of 6,787 positions, driven by strong hiring in IT services and software development. Despite some job losses in telecommunications, overall tech employment across all sectors grew by an estimated 228,000 roles. The tech unemployment rate rose slightly to 2.9%, still lower than the national average of 4%.
Employer demand for tech talent remains high, with job postings increasing by over 51,000 in January, bringing the total to more than 476,000 active listings. Notably, AI-related roles saw growth, with nearly 40,000 openings, particularly in major tech hubs like San Francisco, Seattle, and New York. UI/UX designers, data scientists, and tech support specialists saw some of the highest gains in hiring. Additionally, nearly half of all tech job postings did not require a four-year degree, reflecting a shift toward skills-based hiring in the industry.

Take Charge of Your Career Like a Formula Race Car Pro
Leadership is all about action—making moves, solving problems, and staying ahead of the curve. But what happens when it’s your career that needs a strategic breakthrough?
Here’s a concept worth thinking about: Imagine the masterful strategy and preparation that goes into running a Formula 1 race. Every turn, every pit stop, and every acceleration is planned with precision. And yet, it’s the driver who takes the wheel and makes the split-second decisions that lead to victory.
When it comes to landing your next tech leadership role, you’re that driver. And success depends on how well you prepare and execute your race strategy. So how do you move the needle? Here are three practical tactics to get in front of hiring managers and position yourself for your next big win:
1. Build Your Personal Pit Crew: Behind every Formula 1 driver is a team of experts ensuring the car is race-ready. Your network serves the same role in your career. Reach out to former colleagues, mentors, and industry peers who can share insights or even make introductions. Engage with their posts on LinkedIn, set up coffee chats, and don’t shy away from asking for advice—people enjoy helping those they respect.
I wrote about this in last month’s newsletter you can check it out here. You have to continually nurture your professional network.
2. Make the Qualifying Rounds Count: Before the big race, drivers compete in qualifying rounds to secure the best starting position. Your LinkedIn profile and resume are your qualifying rounds. Are they optimized to showcase your achievements and leadership story? Use clear metrics and results, like “Delivered $15M in cost savings through operational enhancements” or “Led a team of 25 engineers to launch a product now used by 10 million users worldwide.” Ensure your personal brand reflects the value you bring.
3. Take the Inside Lane: The best drivers know how to find opportunities in the tightest of spaces. Similarly, you can bypass the traditional job application process by targeting companies directly. Identify organizations that excite you and connect with decision-makers, such as CTOs or VPs of Engineering. A brief, tailored message expressing your enthusiasm and how you can contribute can be the start of a powerful conversation.
Why New Year’s Resolutions Fail (And What to Do Instead): As the New Year begins, many people set ambitious resolutions, much like amateur soldiers rallying with loud motivational speeches before a battle. They declare how they’ll “crush it” in 2025, diving headfirst into their goals.
But here’s the reality….
Statistics show that New Year’s resolutions tend to fade quickly for most people. Some key findings:
- 23% of adults quit their New Year’s resolutions by the end of the first week of January 10
- 88% of people who set New Year’s resolutions fail them within the first two weeks
-
By the end of January, 43% of adults have abandoned their resolutions
- Only a staggering 9-12% of people feel they are successful in keeping their resolutions by the end of the year
Being a bit of a history buff, this reminds me of two opposing approaches to battle preparation. Remember the Spartans…?
Is your job search strategy that of a professional or amateur?
On one side, you have the professionals—calm, methodical, and focused, like the Spartans who quietly donned their armor and advanced with intention. On the other side, the local amateurs—fueled by excitement and “fake courage” that quickly crumbles under pressure.
The lesson? There’s a professional way to approach change. Instead of relying on a motivational high, focus on building a sustainable strategy. Break your goals into actionable steps, prioritize consistency, and lean on your ‘Pit Crew’ to keep you accountable. It’s not about a burst of energy but about steady, deliberate progress.
You’re running a marathon. Not a sprint.
Closing Thoughts:
Your Next Move: You don’t need a podium to know you’ve won—your next career success is measured by the alignment between your skills, aspirations, and the opportunities you seize. Want to refine your strategy?
Let’s schedule a time to map out your action plan.
Here’s to navigating your career with purpose and precision!
On the street:
The IT job market heading into 2025 presents a mixed picture of stability and strategic adaptation. While overall hiring in the IT sector has plateaued after a surge in 2021-2022, tech unemployment remains low, reflecting a continued demand for specialized skills. Companies are moving from volume-based hiring to a focus on “quality hires,” prioritizing candidates with adaptable and in-demand skills in areas like cybersecurity, AI, and data analytics. Economic uncertainty has prompted many employers to retain current talent and slow down new hiring, creating a competitive landscape for job seekers.
Generative AI (genAI) is reshaping the nature of IT roles, automating repetitive tasks while driving demand for workers skilled in leveraging AI for complex problem-solving and insights. Surveys indicate optimism about AI’s potential, with many employees embracing opportunities for career enhancement through AI tools.
I wrote on the topic of AI-related job skills in high demand in edition Oct #20. You can check out a list of high demand skills here.
However, gaps in training and alignment between AI capabilities and workforce readiness remain key challenges. As companies refine their workforce strategies, internal upskilling, mentorship programs, and AI fluency are expected to play a critical role in preparing for the future of work.

Ghost Jobs Are Haunting the Job Market
Is A Job Post Real Or Not
Does this sound familiar? You’ve seen a position posted on LinkedIn by a company you’re interested in working at. Next you apply online. And just to make sure that they get your application you also apply at the company’s webpage. Makes sense, right? Well, the numbers may tell a different story. An astounding 1/3 of all job postings are not real.
Recently I posted on LinkedIn about an article on CIO.com magazine titled Beware the rise of ‘ghost jobs’ — fake job openings with no intent to hire that discusses this topic in detail. This is such an important topic with many of my clients I decided to include it in this month newsletter.
An overwhelming number of companies post jobs with no intention of actually filling them. The article is based on the work of Professor Hunter Ng of Baruch College, City Of University. His study investigates the emerging phenomenon of “Ghost Jobs”. You can read his complete work here –Why is it so hard to find a job now? Enter Ghost Jobs– analyzes the data and uncovers some hard data facts. The numbers are quite alarming.
According to one survey by ResumeBuilder as part of the of Professor Ng’s research, more than 1,600 hiring managers & recruiters indicated that they have posted ‘Ghost Jobs’. They offer light on the phenomenon.
More than 80% of recruiters said they posted jobs without intending to fill them, and 41% indicated that more than half of the jobs were fake. Of tech companies, 40% posted fake jobs in the past year, and 79% of those still had active ads.
The fake ads cover all job levels: entry-level (63%), midlevel (68%), senior-level (53%), and executive (45%).
The most common outlets for this disinformation are company websites (72%), LinkedIn (70%) followed by ZipRecruiter (58%), Indeed (49%), and Glassdoor (48%). Most of the phantom listings remain active for a month (31%), a few weeks (28%), and in some cases, a year or more (9%).
The more specialized the job skill, the greater the probability of a ghost job according to the research.
If you’ve limited your job search to just what you see is posted, you’re missing a whole other job market out there. Yikes!
Why? Posting Misleading Information Pays Off
Here are a few reasons the survey uncovered:
- 67% of companies are seeking external talent
- 66% do it to create the impression of growth
- 63% to convince current employees that their workload will be reduced
- 62% give current employees the impression that they are not irreplaceable
- 59% to collect applications to create a candidate database
Here Are A Few Tips to Spot Ghost Jobs
- How long has the job been posted
- Generic job posts lacking details
- Company reputation
- Lacking urgency in the hiring process
- Non-responsiveness
- Study company hiring patterns
Closing Thoughts:
As the job market becomes increasingly complex, the rise of “ghost jobs” highlights the importance of proactive career strategies. To navigate this landscape, focus on building a strong professional network. What can you do for your contacts? Networking is your most powerful tool to access genuine opportunities and bypass misleading postings. Remember, career growth isn’t a one-time effort—it’s about consistently nurturing relationships and staying connected, ensuring you’re prepared when opportunity knocks.
In last month’s Heard it on the Tech Street #21, I wrote that “Networking isn’t a one-and-done activity”. Read it here. You have to continually nurture your professional network.
On the street:
The tech job market remains steady, with the unemployment rate inching down to 2.5% (2.6% in Nov), matching the year’s low, despite a slight dip in overall tech employment, according to CompTIA’s analysis of the latest BLS data. While tech job postings decreased to 475,000 in November, AI hiring saw significant growth, with a 71% year-over-year increase and 331,000 active postings in 2024.
This statement has me scratching my head, “AI hiring saw significant growth, with a 71% year-over-year increase and 331,000 active postings in 2024.“
So how many of these jobs are the real deal? Curious minds want to know! Keep reading to find out.

Turn Brief Encounters into Lasting Career Connections
On the street:
Let’s explore tips for building an impactful professional network.
Here’s a career dilemma that my clients and I often talk about: you meet someone interesting at an event or through mutual connections. Sure, you can connect on LinkedIn and then what? Let’s be honest, it feels awkward to reach out later. Most of us end up not following through, and that’s where we miss out on a golden networking opportunity So, in this edition of Career logiX News I’m sharing a few tips on how to transform those brief encounters into meaningful, lasting relationships.
Why Networking Isn’t a One-and-Done
A lot of people think networking is just meeting someone, exchanging insights, and then waiting until they need a favor years later. That’s the wrong way to go about it.
Here’s what you shouldn’t do:
❌ The Cold Call Comeback
You met someone, connected on LinkedIn, then ghosted them for three years before asking for something. This doesn’t build trust; it just feels transactional.❌ The Past Colleague
You worked with someone that you had a good rapport with. You’ve not reached out to them in years and now you’re looking for a favor to land your next job. This doesn’t build trust either.❌ The Cold Network
You’ve pushed off networking for years since you’ve had a job. Now you’re on the market and you need to leverage that professional network in a very competitive job market.❌ The What’s In It For Me Network
Viewing your professional network as a source for you versus how to enable your network. People are much more willing to help someone that has helped them in the past. An impactful network is fueled by helping others first.
Now, let’s talk about what you should do to turn those short interactions into authentic connections:
Building Real Relationships After Meeting Someone
✔️ The Charmed Follow-Up
It’s all about the follow-up. Send a thoughtful, personal message a few days after your first meeting. Something simple like:“HI [Name], it was fantastic meeting you the other day! I loved hearing about [something specific they shared]. Let’s keep in touch, and maybe we can grab coffee sometime.”
Being personable, genuine and specific will make you stand out in their mind.
✔️ Remember Their “Spark”
If someone mentions a passion or a memorable detail about themselves, write it down! The next time you come across something relevant (an article, video, podcast), send it their way with a quick message: “Hey, I saw this and it reminded me of our conversation about [topic]. Thought you’d enjoy it!”✔️ LinkedIn Done Right
After adding them on LinkedIn, stay visible. Share articles, write posts, collaborate on a topic, and engage them with your network. But don’t just post for the sake of it—be interesting and authentic. The goal is to stay on people’s radar in a non-intrusive way.✔️ The Power of Small Gestures
Whether it’s sending an article, remembering their favorite hobby, or simply staying in touch through LinkedIn, the key to meaningful relationships is consistency and genuine interest.
Closing Thoughts:
Professional networking is an essential skill for career development. The era of simply applying online and waiting for opportunities is behind us. To truly thrive, you must think outside the box. Stay ahead of the curve by being innovative and relevant in your field. Most importantly, cultivate and cherish your professional connections—they are the key to unlocking new career heights.
